Expanded Function Dental Assistant

Job Summary

The Extended Function Dental Assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. This position is to effectively and efficiently assist the dentist in providing dental care to patients and to promote Familia Dental’s culture and mission and values.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Ensure treatment rooms are equipped and stocked with inventory
  • Take and record patient’s medical and dental histories and vital signs; blood pressure & pulse.
  • Insure review and completion of documentation
  • Document/chart all dental procedures performed during each patient visit per Dentist’s instructions and legal requirements.
  • Perform the following duties: Coronal Polishing, Placing and finishing amalgam restorations, applying sealants, and monitoring a patient under the influence of nitrous oxide – minimal to deep sedation.
  • Take and develop dental diagnostic x-rays.
  • Make preliminary impressions for study casts.
  • Pour and base diagnostic models and fabricate temporary restorations – as allowed by state law.
  • Sterilize and disinfect instruments, set up instrument trays, prepare materials and assist Dentist during dental procedures.
  • Provide patients with instructions for oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures postoperative instructions as prescribed by Dentist.
  • Effectively provide dental education and information to patients to ensure patient awareness of dental health, and oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health
  • Communicate with the patient treatment that will be performed and financial obligation before starting procedure.
  • Attend and participate in morning huddles, chart reviews and regular office meetings.
  • Understand and follow HIPAA regulations, state and Federal OSHA laws and safety standards and maintain confidentiality.
  • Additional duties as needed.

Qualifications/ Skill Sets:

  • Must be EFDA Certified in the state of Indiana
  • Exceptional customer/patient service skills
  • Excellent verbal and written communication and listening skills
  • Basic computer knowledge and experience with dental management software experience. Denticon experience is preferred.
  • Ability to work in fast paced, patient-focused environment.
  • Detail oriented.
  • Able to carry out written and verbal instructions
  • Organizational and time management skills
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and prioritize effectively
  • Meet state requirements for DA duties, continuing education, or license; Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate, and radiography certificate
  • Experience working within healthcare or related field

Work Conditions & Physical Requirements

  • Work under the supervision of dentists and the Office Manager
  • Environment: well-lit, clean, fast paced
  • Ability to remain in a stationary position, sitting and/or standing, for extended time [e.g. sitting chairside assisting dentist during procedures].
  • Ability to bend, climb stairs and lift [e.g., packing/unpacking boxes, stocking inventory on shelves].

Availability / Schedule:

Office Hours: M-F, 8 AM - 6 PM and Sat, 9 AM - 4 PM

Full time employment:

  • 4+ days a week, 30-40 hours per week
  • available to work Saturdays, when needed
  • Full shifts (8-10 hours)

Part time employment:

  • 2+ days a week, 29 hours or less per week
  • available to work Saturdays, when needed
  • multiple half day shifts or fewer full day shifts
