Job Purpose

To effectively and efficiently assist the dentist in providing dental care to patients and to promote Familia Dental’s culture and mission and values.

Responsibilities

The Lead Dental Assistant performs many tasks requiring both interpersonal and technical skills. Although state regulations vary, responsibilities may include:

  • All Essential Duties and responsibilities of a Dental Assistant
  • Schedule appointments and assist in appointment confirmation calls. Train and Educate the Dental Assistants on job responsibilities.
  • Train DA’s on how to set-up treatment rooms; equip and stock practice inventory
  • Train DA’s to properly take and record patient’s medical and dental histories and vital signs, blood pressure & pulse, medical alerts, and signed consent forms, and x-rays.
  • Train DA’s / Staff on how to recognize signs of a dental emergency and insure proper and timely response and notice to patient, staff, and emergency medical personnel when necessary.
  • Train DA’s on how to make preliminary impressions for study casts.
  • Train DA’s to effectively present to patient the dental treatment plan and proposed plan for continuing treatments in professional and confidential manner
  • Train and instruct DA’s on proper sterilization and disinfection of instruments including use of autoclave and spore check process.
  • Effectively provide dental education and information to staff and patients
  • Inventory / Place dental supply orders (General) / Ensure Dental Supplies Orders are within Clinic Budget. Submit special request from Doctors (via email) to Regional Clinical Director for approval prior to placing order.
  • Maintain/Audit logs on maintenance of equipment, curing lights, all emergency supplies (O2, medication )
  • Lab Cases- Responsible for lab case tracking, maintain logs, documentation, and communication with patients
  • Monitor and address dental supplies usage with staff including Dental Assistant and Doctors.
  • Monitor Doctors schedule/ Patient Flow/Cycle Time Daily
  • Daily/ Hourly Communication with OM - Concerning Patient’s, Doctors, Schedule, DA’s, Equipment, or other issue with the office.
  • Notify Office Manager immediately of equipment trouble or general safety concerns.
  • Being on time daily
  • Attend and participate in morning huddles, chart reviews and regular office meetings in the clinic
  • Attend continuing education and training seminars as scheduled.
  • Understand, follow and educate staff on HIPAA regulations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Understand, follow and educate staff on state and Federal OSHA laws, infection control, safety standards in the dental office and operatory, including wearing personal protective (PPE) barriers such as gloves, disposable gowns, and eye wear; disinfecting and sterilizing instruments and treatment areas; and disposing properly of contaminated or bio-hazardous waste/materials.
  • Audit OSHA protocols in the dental practice
  • Insure review and completion of documentation, accurate and current medical history, medical alerts, and signed consent forms.
  • Recognize signs of a dental emergency, and insure proper and timely response and notice to patient, staff, and emergency medical personnel when necessary
  • Effectively present to patient the dental treatment plan and proposed plan for continuing treatments in professional and confidential manner.
  • Communicate with the patient treatment that will be performed and financial obligation before starting procedure.
  • Understand and explain insurance benefits and financial options in non-clinical terms.
  • Understand and follow HIPAA regulations and maintain confidentiality.
  • Understand and follow state and Federal OSHA laws, infection control, safety standards in the dental office and operatory, including wearing personal protective (PPE) barriers such as gloves, disposable gowns, and eye wear; disinfecting and sterilizing instruments and treatment areas; and disposing properly of contaminated or bio-hazardous waste/materials.
  • Learn and follow Familia Dental’s administrative and operational procedures.
  • Review and follow Employee Handbook to ensure consistent standards.
  • Communicate with the Office Manager to establish office goals and insurance concerns.
  • Maintain professional working environment within office team.
  • Clean, dispose trash, and submit trouble ticket submission to correct any maintenance issues. Train Team on Emergency Protocols (Patient emergency, Fire, Weather related)
  • Learn, follow and train staff on Familia Dental’s administrative and operational procedures.

Qualifications (Experience, Education, License, Certification)

  • 3 – 5 years dental assisting experience preferred but not required.
  • Meet state requirements for Dental Assistant duties, continuing education or license; Basic Life Support (BLS), cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) certificate, and radiography certificate.
